Pilling St John’s fantastic project focussed on environmental art, using recycled materials to create sculptures and artwork, much of which was exhibited for the benefit of the local community.  Activities included making environmentally-friendly ‘Tracy Island’ models (the teacher had kept the original Blue Peter instructions for making one from 1993!), a ‘magic carpet’ of recycled materials, the creation of an ice sculpture in Climate Week 2013, a sculpture trail around the school grounds and decorated carbon footprints (plaster casts of the children’s own feet) that were put around the sculpture trail.  A huge amount of work went into this project, which united all 60 of the schools’ children and reached out into their community too, delivering a message of care for the environment.

Headteacher Pauline Tate said, ”Everyone at Pilling St John’s is very excited on winning this award. The school community is wholly committed to sustainable living and celebrating our wonderful world. Achieving this award enables us to celebrate this work and spurs us on even more!”

YPTE Director, Peter Littlewood, said: “We have become used to seeing excellence in environmental education at Pilling St John’s.  The way that this project engaged the children and reached out into their community too was really great to see.  The children’s artwork was really beautiful and we were particularly amazed by their ice sculpture that was put together to highlight the problem of climate change.
