Central's Sensory Garden

Central Primary School's project was the creation of a sensory garden. Being an urban school, they had no green outdoor areas, so a group of children decided to try and create a peaceful natural space. It would be a place where children could immerse themselves in gardening or simply go there to feel calm and peaceful.  With the help of a teacher, the children designed the garden themselves, prepared the ground and collected recycled materials to build a bug hotel, a range of wind chimes, a giant abacus, a herb garden, signs and even a sculpture from scrap metal! The finished project was and has continued to be one of the children's favourite areas of the school grounds - a safe, inclusive space for all. The children's pride and enjoyment in their new sensory garden is very apparent - what a fantastic achievement!
