Indoor Garden

The children of Bidbury Junior School love outdoor learning and have worked hard to improve their school grounds.  But in the cold winter months, gardening activities are more difficult and little changes from week to week.  The idea presented was to bring the outside in by creating an indoor garden which would enable this valuable learning to continue and create a central area of the school that everyone could be proud of.  Staff and children were both involved in the design and making of the indoor garden, which included planters, a water feature and a pets' corner.  Parents and the local community contributed plants, seeds and seedlings, so it was a real team effort. A priority was that some fruits and vegetables were grown, so the children could grow their food from seed and then cook with it.  With the addition of some new benches, children now picnic in their indoor garden each lunchtime and use it as an area to work in throughout the day. It is also used for art lessons, circle time and parents’ evenings.  This was a highly original project and has created a relaxed and peaceful area of calm in a busy and bustling school environment.
