Pollution is the problem - can we be the solution?

Lowick and Holy Island First School's exciting approach to environmental research has taken them on a captivating journey from the icy realms of polar regions to the depths of the world's oceans. Their quest for knowledge led them to Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh, where they immersed themselves in the wonders of the natural world. Inspired by their newfound understanding, the children created a compelling video on polar bears and harnessed their scientific skills to track the route of 'Blitzberg', their sponsored polar bear, as it traversed the frozen landscapes with a GPS tracker.

But their mission didn't stop there. Armed with the knowledge that plastic pollution poses a grave threat to marine life, these young eco-warriors took action. They participated in the Big Plastic Count, determined to quantify the scale of the problem. Undeterred by the magnitude of the challenge, they implemented a school-wide crisp packet recycling program and established a Toy Swap facility.

Their commitment to making a tangible difference led them to the shores of Holy Island, where they embarked on a beach cleanup. In just one morning, these determined youngsters collected a staggering 25kg of rubbish, most of which was plastic, showcasing the power of collective action in the face of environmental challenges.

As a testament to their achievements, Lowick and Holy Island First School have been awarded a £500 prize to further fuel their green initiatives and inspire future generations of environmental trailblazers.
