Turners Hill CE Primary School Regional Champion 2012, Totally Clued Up - South/ Central

At Turners Hill, they have developed a number of eco initiatives over the years which have been integral to their curriculum. The children learn about the importance of saving water through their rainwater harvesting system launched in March this year to flush the school’s toilets. On a recycling mission, the children ran their own business project selling quality second hand goods which involved stock taking and board meetings!

Their solar panels and micro wind turbines support their continuous investigations into energy and how to save it. The children get to experience the great outdoors as the trees they planted at Hunts Wood grow taller and many children now walk to school. Turner’s Hill will not stop there as they have plans to develop a conservation area in the woods and a bee keeping area.

Children in different year groups are responsible for looking after different aspects of their outdoor area such as litter picking, composting and looking after the chickens. They often cook with the eggs and ingredients they pick from their vegetable garden.

The school is a shining example to the local community and other schools as they regularly hold open days and have meetings with the council to showcase their work for the environment.
