Mikes Meadow

After their old mobile buildings were demolished staff and pupils from Batheaston CEVC Primary School decided to renew an adjacent piece of waste land and clear it of brambles.  They called it “Mike’s Meadow”.  They soon began using the area for outdoor learning.  They built a straw bale classroom from recycled tyres and straw bales and many people, including children were involved in plastering the wall.

They planted over 500 trees and shrubs with members of the community.  These included bluebells, snowdrops and other wild flowers and they even made some new vegetable beds from old tyres.  They made an artificial badger sett and otter holt in the pond and wetland area and planted more plants there.  They built a story circle complete with fire pit and a newt sculpture with a tunnel through its tail.

You would never imagine how six months earlier it was all clay and mud, now turned into a beautiful outdoor space!
