Get Creative - Africa!

As a result of a teacher’s visit to Kenya, where she was the guest of a centre providing wheelchairs to disabled children, the children of Normanton-on-Soar were inspired to help provide more wheelchairs for disabled youngsters in Kenya.  They held a Charity Day during which they were sponsored to only use one hand for the whole day, they held sales of toys and cakes and raised a total of £1,000 – enough to buy four new wheelchairs for children in Kenya.  The children built their own model wheelchairs from recycled materials, they learned songs from Africa and presented their work in a beautiful folder made from recycled album covers, with pages made from LPs!  A beautiful and highly environmentally aware project, which reached out across the world and created real benefit for young people in Kenya.

Teacher Karen Pygall, who led the project said, “This has been a tremendous achievement for a school of our size, it just shows what can be done when a whole community comes together. Whilst we may be small, we have been able to have an impact globally!”

YPTE Director, Peter Littlewood, said: “For the children of Normanton on Soar, knowing that they have been chosen as the very best of some 44,500 children who took part this year has to be a great feeling!  Their work epitomised what the Total Green School Awards are about, with some really fantastic and original environmental initiatives and they even added a global dimension too.”
