Food and Farming

The children of Drummore School have been exploring the theme of Food, Farming and the Environment this year.  They have really enjoyed the topic and have learnt about some very important issues.  The school has created its own vegetable patch; the children raised money to purchase soil and wood for the raised beds and have been involved in deciding what to grow.  This has taught them a great deal about food seasonality and about how food is grown and harvested.  The crops grown are enjoyed by the children in school and they've even experiemnted with some unusual vegetables such as purple carrots, blue potatoes and spicy lettuce!

The children have also learned about food miles and where their food has come from.  They have studied the journey of chocolate and were lucky enough to visit a local company where they had the opportunity to make their own chocolate! They've also taken part in food tasting, comparing food from far away with food from their local area.  The children have produced some fantastic pieces of work on the topic and it is lovely to see photographs of them having fun as they learn. Durmmore School must be congratulated on the way in which it has embraced outdoor learning and the importance of looking after our environment.
