"There's An Orangutan In My Packed Lunch!"

This was a multi-faceted whole-school project investigating the issues surrounding pre-packaged and processed food, together with the impacts it has on the environment, health, energy consumption, waste, litter and biodiversity.  The impact of palm oil production on the lifestyle of local people and orangutans was a particular focus of the project, and explains its quirky title! The school was able to form a relationship with a school in Indonesia, which enabled the children to gain a much deeper understanding of life there and how it contrasted with their own in Okehampton.

YPTE Director, Peter Littlewood, said: “The sheer amount of work, the dedication of staff and the keen involvement of the children’s families were striking in this project.  The diverse range of topics the children looked at - each in considerable depth - was really impressive. It was evident to the judging panel that the quality of environmental education being provided at Okehampton Primary School is absolutely outstanding.  The children’s passion for protecting the environment is wonderful to see. Having spoken to their Environment Club myself, I was struck by how much they already knew and that they were already finding better ways of organising their own and their families’ lives to minimise their impacts on the planet for the future.”
